There are no restrictions to export Maldivian fish products to Sri Lanka, states the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Shahid.
Minister Shahid’s comment comes at a time discussions are ongoing between the Sri Lankan government to cease exports of fish products from other countries to Lanka.
In a tweet relating to this, Minister Shahid stated that during discussions held with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister and Fisheries Minister, they assured no restrictions will be imposed on importing fish products from the Maldives to Sri Lanka. In his tweet, Minister Shahid thanked Sri Lankan authorities for this gesture.
Recently the Sri Lankan government announced plans are in the pipeline to cease fish exports from other countries as part of their effort to promote local businesses and further boost their economy. Following this, Maldivian fish processing and producing companies have expressed concern about losing a potential market of exports. Sri Lanka has been a huge market for Maldivian dried and salted fish products.
